Dallas-Fort Worth tub-to-shower price bands

DFW price lists run from $1,500 for a prefab insert to $15,000 or more for a custom tiled walk-in. A full accessible bathroom costs far more. Every figure below comes from a third party and is not a quote.

Fin Home lists its prices as shower types in a remodel, not as full tub conversions. ALC is the only source here that prices the whole conversion. It says the price depends on the pan type and whether the shower is curbless.

Prefab insert, tiled walk-in or curbless

Prefab or acrylic insert. This is the lowest band, at $1,500 to $4,000 on Fin Home’s list. Fin Home’s page does not say whether tub removal is included. Ask each bidder.

Tiled walk-in. The two remodelers disagree on the low end. ALC starts at $4,000 for a custom tiled walk-in with glass, a niche and a bench. Fin Home starts its custom tile walk-in at $8,000.

Curbless. No source here prices a curbless shower on its own. The nearest Dallas figure is the 2025 Cost vs Value universal-design bath at $35,974. Its national figure is $42,183. That job redoes the whole 5x7 room, not only the shower.

The Cost vs Value job removes the tub and adds a curbless tiled shower. It includes a fold-out seat, an adjustable showerhead and a thermostatic mixing valve. It also adds a comfort-height toilet, a 36-inch zero-threshold door, switches at seated height and radiant heat under vinyl tile. JLC’s Dallas page does not label its three columns. This page reads the first as Dallas and the last as national.

HomeAdvisor says three grab bars in one job run about $250. HomeAdvisor and Fixr disagree on reinforcement cost, so ask for it as a line item. Angi’s Dallas accessibility page does not price grab bars, ramps or doorways.

Moving the drain or valve: licensed plumbing and a permit

Moving the shower drain or valve is plumbing. It needs a licensed plumber. State law also tells cities that regulate plumbing to require a permit for most plumbing work. A handyman without a plumbing license cannot do that part.

  • License: Texas Occupations Code §1301.351 says only licensed people, supervised by a licensee, may do plumbing. Anyone who advertises plumbing must secure a responsible master plumber. TSBPE licenses plumbers.
  • State permit rule: §1301.551(c) says a city with a plumbing ordinance must require a permit for plumbing work. The exceptions it lists are leak repairs and replacing lavatory or kitchen faucets, ballcocks, water control valves, garbage disposals and water closets.
  • Dallas: City Code §301.2.2 exempts replacing a fixture in kind with no change in rough-in. A moved drain or valve is a change in rough-in. A separate item exempts repairs or repiping on a single-family or duplex premises that do not exceed $1,000, excluding gas piping. Ask Dallas Building Inspection whether a moved drain fits it.
  • Wiring: wiring a heated floor, moving switches or adding a fan is electrical work. It needs a licensed electrician. Texas Occupations Code §1305.151 bars electrical work without a license, except under §1305.003. TDLR licenses electricians.

What moves the price

  • Shower type: on Fin Home’s list, a prefab insert costs least and custom tile costs most.
  • Pan and curb: ALC says the pan type and a curbless design decide where a job falls in its $6,000 to $15,000 range.
  • Glass: Fin Home says a frameless glass enclosure raises the walk-in price.
  • Plumbing: keeping the drain and valve in place avoids the moves priced above.
  • Hidden conditions: ALC warns that cast iron drains and slab foundations can hide surprises once demolition starts.
  • Room scope: a new floor, toilet or vanity turns a conversion into a remodel. See what a bathroom remodel costs in DFW.

Homes built before 1978: the EPA lead rule

In a pre-1978 home, tearing out a painted wall around a tub can trigger EPA’s lead rule (40 CFR Part 745). EPA says anyone paid to disturb paint in pre-1978 housing must be certified, even a sole proprietor. Texas is not on EPA’s list of states that run their own program. EPA says it runs the program in most states.

40 CFR §745.83 defines minor repair as disturbing 6 square feet or less of painted surface per room inside. The outdoor limit is 20 square feet. Work that demolishes painted surfaces does not fit that definition. Ask for the firm’s EPA certification before demolition.

Is a shower kit cheaper than a tiled walk-in shower?

Yes, on one DFW price list. Fin Home Custom Contracting lists a prefabricated shower insert at $1,500 to $4,000 (Mar 2026). A tile surround runs $4,000 to $10,000. A custom tile walk-in runs $8,000 to $15,000 or more. Fin Home says size, tile and frameless glass drive the walk-in price.

Does a walk-in shower pay off when you sell a Dallas home?

Not fully, in the 2025 Cost vs Value report. The Dallas universal-design bath, with a curbless walk-in shower, cost $35,974 and added $20,939 in resale value. That is 58.2% of the cost recouped. The midrange bath update on the same page recouped 75.7%.

Does swapping a tub for a shower pan in the same spot need a Dallas permit?

It is unclear from the code text. Dallas City Code §301.2.2 exempts replacing plumbing fixtures in kind where no change in rough-in is involved. The text does not say whether a tub and a shower pan count as in kind. Ask Dallas Building Inspection before work starts. Moving the drain or valve falls outside that exemption.

Can I keep the old tub drain location to save money?

Ask your installer whether your shower pan can use it. ALC Construction says keeping the drain in place holds a conversion's price down (Aug 2026). In a Dallas bathroom remodel, it says leaving the toilet, shower and sink in place can save $3,000 to $7,000 in labor. Relocating a fixture adds cost, and the drain work needs a licensed plumber.

How much should I set aside for surprises?

ALC Construction recommends a 10% to 15% contingency, especially in homes built before 2000. It warns that cast iron drains and slab foundations sometimes hide surprises once demolition starts. On a $10,000 conversion, that is $1,000 to $1,500 (simple arithmetic, not a quote).
